April 2021: Resilient Together

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Resilience, along with participating organizations, will be hosting virtual events and a fundraising campaign to raise awareness of sexual violence and support community efforts to prevent it. This year’s theme is Resilient Together, in honor of all the actions we take—individual and collective, public and private, big and small—to end sexual violence in our communities. For more information about Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Resilience, contact Danielle Boachie at

SAAM Challenge Fundraising Campaign

The SAAM Challenge is a fundraising campaign that was created for individuals, organizations, and businesses to raise funds throughout April in support of Resilience’s free programs and services for survivors.

This year, our fundraising goal is $15,000.  We would like to have as many people as possible participate in our SAAM Challenge and hope everyone will join us in whatever way works for them. Participation can look like donating, starting a fundraiser, or simply sharing our messages with your friends and family.

Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Please wear denim, share photos, and tag Resilience on social media (@ResilienceChi)!

Designed Out Of Love
Designed Out Of Love was created by Resilience Associate Board member Lauren Okura. This initiative is a platform to share information on child sexual abuse and sexual assault awareness and prevention. She created a 2021 SAAM fundraiser with all profits being donated to Resilience, having partnered with two amazing small businesses—Human Up and The Colour Polka Dot (read more about them below).

You can find the fundraiser on and follow the campaign on Facebook and Instagram.

Human Up
Human Up was created by Chicago-based artists Arden Lapin and Lily Matteson to provide affordable, locally made Pride apparel to the Queer community in response to the increase of large corporations exploiting LGBTQIA+ Pride for their own profit.

Thinking of their clothing as wearable social statements, educational tools, and conversation-starters, Human Up has since grown to support many other causes with a mission of inclusivity to all, having raised funds for organizations such as The Okra Project, The Movement For Black Lives, and The Yellow Tulip Project. This April, they join Designed Out Of Love to support sexual assault awareness and child abuse prevention and are generously donating 100% of the profits from this collaboration to Resilience.

The Colour Polka Dot
The Colour Polkadot is a black-owned Kawaii-style accessories shop run by two sisters. They specialize in decoden phone cases, chokers, mirrors, keychains, and more. In collaboration with Designed Out Of Love, they are donating the profits from this campaign to Resilience in support of SAAM and Child Abuse Prevention.

“We’re so happy to be a part of this campaign and feel strongly about this cause, no one should have to go through sexual assault.”
